Background and political history
A former senior electorate officer to retiring MP Sharon Bird, Alison Byrnes was elected in 2022 to represent Wollongong, Shellharbour and the Illawarra escarpment. She began her working life at the South Coast Labour Council, later managing community campaigns on steelmaking transition, TAFE funding and the NDIS. Byrnes sits on the Joint Standing Committee on the NDIS and champions clean-energy manufacturing at Port Kembla.
