Background and political history
Anthony Albanese is an Australian politician serving as the 31st and current Prime Minister of Australia since 2022 and Leader of the Labor Party since 2019. He has been a member of parliament for Grayndler since 1996. Born in Sydney in 1963, Albanese was raised by a single mother in public housing. He attended St Mary's Cathedral College before studying economics at the University of Sydney. He joined the Labor Party as a student and worked as a party official before entering parliament. During the Rudd and Gillard governments, Albanese served in various ministerial roles including Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Minister for Regional Development and Local Government, and Deputy Prime Minister. After Labor's defeat in the 2019 election, Albanese was elected unopposed as Labor leader. He led the party to victory in the 2022 federal election, defeating Scott Morrison's Liberal-National Coalition government.
