Biography
Background and political history
Tanya Plibersek has represented the inner-city seat of Sydney since 1998 and is currently Australia's longest-serving woman in the House. Growing up in public housing in Sutherland, she was the first in her family to attend university. Plibersek served as Minister for Housing, Status of Women, Human Services and Health in the Rudd-Gillard era and became Deputy Leader of the Labor Party (2013-19). As Environment Minister she is steering the Murray-Darling Basin overhaul and new nature-repair market legislation.
