Biography
Background and political history
Jim Chalmers is an Australian politician serving as the Treasurer of Australia in the Albanese government since May 2022. He has been a member of parliament for the Queensland division of Rankin since 2013. Born in Brisbane in 1978, Chalmers grew up in Logan City. He holds a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Commerce from Griffith University, where he graduated with First Class Honours in public policy. He went on to complete a PhD in political science and international relations at the Australian National University, focusing his doctoral thesis on the prime ministership of Paul Keating. Before entering parliament, Chalmers worked as a senior adviser to the Queensland state government, and later served as Deputy Chief of Staff and Principal Adviser to Treasurer Wayne Swan from 2007 to 2010. He was then promoted to Chief of Staff to the Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer from 2010 to 2013. He briefly served as the Executive Director of the Chifley Research Centre in 2013. After entering parliament in 2013, Chalmers served in various shadow ministerial roles including Shadow Minister for Finance from 2016 to 2019 and Shadow Treasurer from 2019 to 2022, before being appointed Treasurer following Labor's victory in the 2022 federal election. Chalmers is the author of several books including "Glory Daze: How a World-Beating Nation Got So Down on Itself" (2013) and "Changing Jobs: The Fair Go in the New Machine Age" (2017, co-authored with Mike Quigley).
