Biography
Background and political history
Economics-focused Labor stalwart Cameron Dick served as Queensland Treasurer for seven years through the COVID-19 pandemic and mining boom, becoming deputy to Steven Miles after Labor's 2024 election defeat. A former union lawyer and industrial advocate, Dick joined parliament in 2015 and quickly rose through ministerial ranks, serving as Health Minister before becoming Treasurer in 2017. He oversaw Queensland's economic response to COVID-19, including the JobKeeper-style Business Support Grants, and managed the state's finances during the coal royalties windfall that funded major infrastructure and cost-of-living measures. As Treasurer, Dick implemented the progressive coal royalties that generated billions in additional revenue, funded the $1000 electricity rebates and 50-cent transport fares that became signature Miles government policies. From the Labor Right faction, he struck a deal with left-wing Miles in 2023 to become Deputy Premier, helping secure Labor unity during the leadership transition from Palaszczuk.
